82 semi - Schumacher collides with Battiston

Goal kick given

Battiston stretchered off unconscious with 3 broken ribs, a damaged vertebrae and missing teeth. He later slips into a coma.

Medics remark that the injuries are more likely to be apparent after a car crash.

After the game Platini tells press he had to check for a pulse as he thought Battiston had been killed.

Game goes to pens - Schumacher saves twice to put the Germans thru to the final.

What a night.

Nearly killed Battiston and didn't even get carded from what I remember. Apparently to this day, Battiston has a cracked vertebra and damaged teeth.

Bernie

Yes it was. Sure JT had a say in it. James was one of the gang for sure.

Looking at the Germany game I recon Green wouldn't have been beaten by Poldoski's goal for 2-0.

Re: World cup memories
I met a Northern Irish bloke. His story made me chuckle.

He told me that as a boy (I'm guessing he would have been about 10) he won a competition for two to go to Spain for Espana 82 to follow his team.

He went with his mum. Northern Ireland beat the hosts 1-0, one of the biggest shocks ever in a finals. This bloke's mum gets fucking PISSED and ends up getting arrested for something.

10 year old boy walking around Valencia on his own, mother in jail. Ha ha.

Re: World cup memories
It was poor from Capello to drop Green after that.

Especially when his replacement was 40yo David James

My first real memory on tv was watching our beloved BM give probably the best defensive performance I have ever witnessed during the Brazil game. It was a genuine masterclass. Silky skills, impeccable timing and as cool as a cucumber in that heat! Brilliant

Oh and btw I think Green was England No1 at the time.

Loved the guy in the first years for us. But what happened to him?

Was a bit tongue in cheek ref Green but not a great start was it? . The Algeria game has to be one of the worse I've seen by an England team. Didn't he play Barry in the CM role and have Gerrard play wide? Jesus.

How long before we get a better chance than 2006/2010?

Re: World cup memories
As was pointed out at the time the yank should never have been able to get the shot away if the outfield players had been doing their jobs properly!

Never Greenies fault

FC.

I think that was the one incident above all others that told me football had changed forever and the lengths that some will go to to get an advantage is limitless.
